The weeknd’s new mixtape plays on sounds we’ve already heard while progressing with what seems like leaps to choppy beats that break up his usual melodic style. Have no fear though, he still maintains the drone dream inducing synth beats of House of Balloons.

People are hearing the evolution of hip hop through the radio. It’s something to be recognized. From Drake’s new slowed down beats of “Marvin’s Room” and “Trust Issues” to Big Sean’s “Marvin Gaye and Chardonnay”, listeners’ ears are hearing the songs of the vanguard of hip hop. It seems to me that the downfall of the ultra synth and house music club banger is on the way out. Even if people argue/say that Marvin Gaye and Chardonnay has the same effect as Pitbull’s “Give Me Everything” or LMFAO’s “Party Rock Anthem”, Big Sean’s track is doing it in a revolutionary way.

More to come.

In his new song, frank oceans’s elevated pitch takes listeners on another level allowing the undulating synth beats to flow through listeners and transport them to a dreamy place. Let’s hope he keeps this up. This could easily be his next level. Thanks to his freshness on the scene and his crooning vocals almost any new material has the potential to be good.

The Weeknd – High for This

The Weeknd – Rolling Stone

Performing a stunning show at Toronto’s Mod Club this past Sunday, The Weeknd’s songs captivated the crowd as it appears that everyone knew the lyrics quite well. The “Post-R&B” direction that staples the sound of The Weeknd’s House of Balloons album translated very well into the live performance with the aid of his backing band. With his highly anticipated sophomore release still on the horizon Abel Tesfaye is beginning to make large steps toward bigger things. We See you OVOXO.
